BIOGRAPHY OF RANGER ROGER B. BROWN

Ranger Roger Brown entered the Army in 1963 taking basic training and advanced infantry training at Fort Ord, California. He then attended Basic Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia and was assigned to A Company, 502nd Battle Group in the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky as a Rifleman. In 1964, the Army went to the ROAD System and he was assigned to A/1/502nd Parachute Infantry. Ranger Brown served as a rifleman, grenadier, fire team leader and squad leader. While serving with A/1/502nd, he was promoted to Private (E2), Private First Class (E3), Specialist four (E4) and Sergeant (E5). Ranger Brown attended Ranger School in 1965. As soon as he graduated, he re-enlisted to go to Vietnam. In Vietnam, he was assigned to A/1/503rd Parachute Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade (Separate). A short time later, his TAC officer at Ranger School, Captain Bill Palmer, formed the 173rd Airborne Brigades Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol Platoon (Provisional). Ranger Brown volunteered for LRRP and was assigned as a team leader and immediately put his Ranger skills to work with a five man team. While serving with LRRP, he was promoted to Staff Sergeant E-6. Included as attachments to this Tab are testimonial endorsements from the first commanders of the 173rd LRRP, retired Colonels Palmer and Carroll.

After completing his tour in Vietnam, Ranger Brown was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell Kentucky. He served as a senior instructor at the 101st Airborne Division's RECONDO School. The 101st Airborne Division was alerted to go to Vietnam four months later and Ranger Brown volunteered to return with the Division. Colonel Beckwith, Division G-3, asked Ranger Brown to join the new LRRP unit of the 101st Airborne unit. This became F/58 Infantry (LRRP) and eventually was named Company L Rangers several years later. He was shot in the chest on patrol in 1968 and was awarded his second Bronze Star with "V" device and medevaced to the United States. After convalescing in the hospital for several months, he was assigned to the Ranger Department at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Enclosed as attachments to this Tab are testimonial endorsements from men who served with Ranger Brown. One served as his Assistant Team Leader in both 173rd LRRP and F/58th Infantry (LRRP). The other served with him in F/58th Infantry (LRRP) and Company N Rangers.

In 1970 he was promoted to Sergeant First Class (E-7) and returned to Vietnam in the capacity of a Platoon Sergeant in Company N, attached to the 173rd Airborne Brigade (Separate).

He was assigned to the Ranger Department upon return to CONUS and then attended Officer Candidate School in February 1971.

He graduated as leadership honor graduate from OCS and was commissioned in the Infantry. Ranger Brown was then assigned to a training battalion at Ft. Ord, California. In January of 1971, he was notified that he would be assigned to Ft. Benning as a Rifle Platoon Leader in Bravo Company, First Ranger Battalion. He arrived at Ft. Benning in February, 1974 and was one of the first 10 personnel to sign in to newly formed battalion. He served as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Weapons Platoon Leader, Company XO and was briefly the Company Commander. After being promoted to Captain, he was assigned as the S-3 of 1/75th Rangers.

Ranger Brown departed the 1/75th in April 1977 to finish his Bachelor’s Degree and then graduated from the Infantry Officers Advanced Course. He was then assigned to the Ranger Department as Officer in Charge of Camp Darby and as Company Commander of the Third Ranger Company.

He was assigned to SETAF in Vincenza, Italy in 1981. He served as the assistant G-3 with the responsibility of deploying the 509th Airborne Infantry.

Ranger Brown returned to Ft. Benning, Georgia in July of 1983 and retired August 1st, 1983 having served twenty years. Ranger Brown served over nine years in Ranger-type units that are in the official lineage of the modern Rangers, in the 1/75th Rangers and as Ranger School Cadre. He received the following decorations: two Bronze Stars with "V" device, Air Medal, six Vietnam Service Medals, one Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, three Army Commendation medals, the Valorous Unit Citation, two Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development ribbons, and most important to him, his Ranger Tab.

Ranger Brown has continued his involvement with the Ranger Community and is currently serving as Unit Director for 1/75th Rangers of the 75th Ranger Regiment Association. He has always been a source of inspiration for those who have served with and under him and has been the life’s blood of the N Rangers branch of the 75th RRA since it was formed.
